“It fascinates me again and again that my sculptures come into dialogue with nature and people in this way,” says the artist Sonja Knapp about her exhibition at Suvretta House & her works.
Light and shadow are a major theme in Sonja Knapp’s works. So it is not only the actual sculpture that is created, but also the way the polished surfaces are designed to reflect the environment.
Sonja Knapp, born and raised in Zurich, graduated from the School of Arts and Crafts under Johannes Itten. After completing her apprenticeship as a graphic designer, she went to Paris, where her career as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer began.
In the early 1960s she became artistic director of the Galerie Lafayette. Her encounter with Emanuel Ungaro in 1965 led to the creation of the skin couture brand “Emanuel Ungaro”.
The colourful Imprimé fabrics and the Body Sculptures make the fashion house famous far beyond the country’s borders.
After 25 years, Sonja Knapp retires from fashion – into her own world of art.
Parallel to painting, she creates her first bronze sculptures. In search of a different, more up-to-date material and in keeping with the spirit of the times, she created new and inspiring works in aluminium and highly polished stainless steel.
Discover carefully selected works of her creation this summer at Suvretta House.
