1st March marks Chalandamarz, the festival at which winter is driven away. Boys and girls dressed in bright blue outfits and traditional red-and-black Engadin costumes go from house to house singing traditional songs. Just as in the popular Swiss children’s story, “Schellenursli”, as they go the children clank huge cowbells, or plumpas, to drive away the spirits of winter – a delightful way to herald the spring.
